Newsom Signs California Ban on Out-of-Pocket Costs for Abortions

California outlawed insurance deductibles and co-pays for abortions under legislation Gov. Gavin Newsom signed late Tuesday.

The bill (S.B. 245) prohibits health-care service plans and insurance policies from imposing insurance co-pays or deductibles for abortions. State senators on Monday concurred in Assembly amendments, voting 28 to 7 along party lines in the Democrat-dominated Senate to send the bill to the governor. The law takes effect Jan. 1, 2023.
