New York to Establish Minimum Nursing Home Staffing Levels

Nursing homes in New York state starting next year will be required to maintain a certain level of staffing or face penalties under legislation signed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D).

The measure (S.6346/A.7119) requires the state health commissioner to create standards for staffing levels and minimum staffing requirements in nursing homes. The facilities must meet a daily average of 3.5 hours of nursing care per resident per day, with no less than 2.2 hours of care provided by certified nurse assistants and 1.1 hours provided by licensed nurses.
