New York Therapist, City Settle Suit Over Gay Conversion Law

New York City will pay $100,000 in attorneys’ fees and costs to settle a psychotherapist’s claim that a now-repealed ban on gay conversion therapy violated health-care providers’ and patients’ free speech rights, according to a federal court in New York.

David Schwartz and the city filed stipulations of dismissal and settlement July 10, telling the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York that they had resolved their dispute.

The city denied liability, according to the settlement agreement. It agreed to pay the money directly to Schwartz’s counsel, Alliance Defending Freedom.
