New York Law Extends Protections Against Surprise Medical Bills

Emergency room patients in New York state who have individual health insurance plans will get more protection from “surprise” bills under legislation signed Oct. 17 by Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D).

The legislation, S.317/A.264B, extends to hospitals protections in place in the state since 2015. The earlier law only covered surprise bills from physicians.
