New Orleans Hospitals Discharging Patients Ahead of Major Storm

Aug. 27, 2021, 3:04 PM UTC

Louisiana Children’s Medical Center will put its six New Orleans-area hospitals into lockdown Sunday morning in anticipation of a storm that’s forecast to become Hurricane Ida.

During the lockdown, doctors, nurses and other employees finishing their shifts will be allowed to stay in the hospital so they don’t need to travel in the storm, said spokeswoman Mary Beth Romig-Haskins. LCMC’s hospitals will try to discharge as many patients as they can on Friday.

The facilities are equipped with backup power in case the city loses electricity.

“We’ve been through this,” Romig-Haskins said. “We have good systems in place.”
