New Mexico Democrats want to secure insurance coverage for residents with preexisting conditions regardless of what happens to federal law.
Legislation that passed the state House of Representatives March 7 stems from uncertainty over the Affordable Care Act, which prevents insurers from refusing coverage or charging people more for it if they have health issues prior to starting coverage. Some New Mexico lawmakers want that provision secured into state law in case it disappears at the federal level.
