New Jersey Brothers Get Prison Time for Prescription Drug Scheme

A New Jersey brother duo has been sentenced to prison for their roles in a multimillion-dollar scheme to defraud health benefits programs, according to the Justice Department Friday.

John Cuffari and Christopher Cuffari were sentenced to 17 months and 27 months in prison, respectively, for defrauding benefits programs of at least $5.3 million and $7.89 million, respectively, for the billing of medically unnecessary compounded prescriptions, the DOJ said.

Compounded prescriptions are unique medications that are mixed by a pharmacist to meet the individual medical needs of a patient, the department said.
