New Jersey Bills Aim to Tighten Opioid Prescribing Practices

Requirements for prescribing opioids and other addictive drugs for chronic pain would be tightened under legislation approved by New Jersey lawmakers.

A bill (S-3604/A-5242) won unanimous passage by the Democratic-controlled Assembly and Senate Jan. 8 and went to Gov. Chris Christie (R) for expected approval. It added new provisions to an opioid prescription law enacted in February and was part of a batch of anti-opioid addiction measures adopted in the closing days of the legislative session as the term-limited Christie prepared to leave office on Jan. 16.
