Nebraska Voters Back Abortion Limits, Reject Broader Protections

Nebraska voters enshrined existing abortion limits into the state constitution, rejecting a competing measure that would have allowed abortions later in pregnancy, the Associated Press said Wednesday.

The approved amendment (Initiative 434) protects “unborn children” from abortion in the second and third trimesters, therefore prohibiting abortions except in situations of a “medical emergency or when the pregnancy results from sexual assault or incest.” The counter-proposal (Initiative 439) backed by Democrats and abortion rights advocates would have added to the state constitution a “fundamental right to abortion without interference from the state” until fetal viability, or roughly ...
