Nearly Half-Million Teachers Lack Health Insurance, Survey Finds

Almost a half-million teachers don’t have health insurance, leaving many at risk of high health-care costs as the government pushes to reopen schools, a survey found.

The analysis, by ValuePenguin, a subsidiary of mortgage lender Lending Tree, comes amid concerns that students going back to school could infect their teachers, who in turn could spread the disease further. Teachers who contract the virus may face steep costs without insurance.

There were 12.8 million full-time public school teachers in the U.S. as of 2018, according to American Community Survey data published by the U.S. Census Bureau. The half-million uninsured ...
