Near-Total Abortion Ban Headed to Alabama Governor’s Desk

A ban on abortion at any stage of pregnancy is headed to Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey (R) for her signature after winning approval in the state Senate on May 14.

H.B. 314 passed the state Senate 25-6. It earlier passed the House 74-3, with Democrats walking out in protest.. The bill makes it a felony for doctors to perform abortions, with exceptions for medical emergencies, ectopic pregnancies, and fetuses with fatal anomalies.

The governor’s office declined to comment on Ivey’s intentions once the bill reaches her desk, but if she vetoes it, the Legislature could override her with a majority ...
