A total of $634.4 billion in health insurance premiums was collected in 2011, 36.8 percent of the $1.7 trillion in premiums collected for all types of insurance, according to a report released Aug. 8 by the organization that represents insurance regulators.
Health insurance premiums made up the largest line of business among insurance types, followed by life and annuities, with $599.1 billion; property and casualty with $468.6 billion; and other types of insurance totaling $20.4 billion, according to 2011 Insurance Department Resources Report—Volume Two, issued by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.
