N.Y. Lawmakers Can Vote Remotely During Virus Outbreak

March 30, 2020, 9:28 PM UTC

New York state lawmakers can now vote from home amid the coronavirus outbreak.

The state Assembly Monday voted 89-to-34 to change voting protocols during declared states of emergency, and allow members to participate in legislative session through tele- or video-conferencing (E.00854).

The state Senate passed a similar resolution (No. 3108) on Sunday.

The actions come as the deadline fast approaches for the state’s budget for fiscal 2021, which begins April 1. The governor and legislative leaders haven’t announced an end to the spending plan negotiations.
