Most Challenges for Meaningful Use Stage 1 Relate to Change Management, KPMG Says

Change management and workflow redesign, not technology implementation, pose the biggest challenges to providers and hospitals attempting to meet Stage 1 “meaningful use” requirements, KPMG Healthcare advisors said March 21.

While 10 percent of effort toward meeting Stage 1 meaningful use criteria will be integrating and using health information technology, the remaining 80 percent of the implementation effort will be understanding the full meaning of the Medicare and Medicaid EHR incentive program rules and adopting clinician workflows that capture the necessary data, Joe Kuehn, partner at KPMG in Melville, N.Y., said during a webinar hosted by the company.
