Mississippi’s Six-Week Abortion Ban Goes Before Fifth Circuit

The Fifth Circuit will hear oral arguments Thursday on a Mississippi law that bans abortions after a fetal heartbeat has been detected, which usually occurs at about six weeks of pregnancy.

A federal trial court in Mississippi blocked the law from taking effect in May, saying it threatened “immediate harm to women’s rights, especially considering most women do not seek abortion services until after six weeks.” The state asked the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit to overturn that decision.
