Michigan’s Whitmer Declares Racism a Public Health Crisis

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) signed an executive directive Wednesday declaring racism a public health crisis and issuing a pledge to take steps to decrease disparate health outcomes for Black residents.

The declaration will require the state to collect, analyze, and publish health data on the disparate health outcomes for minority communities in the state. With that data, a newly formed Black Leadership Advisory Council will seek to help implement policies to eliminate those inequities.

Though around only 14% of the state’s population, Black Michiganders account for 38% of the state’s Covid-19 deaths.
