Michigan’s Gay Conversion Therapy Ban Enforceable During Suit

Michigan can enforce a law banning state-licensed therapists from engaging in conversion therapy with minors while it’s awaiting trial on whether the measure violates constitutional free-speech, religion, and due process guarantees, a federal judge said.

Catholic Charities of Jackson, Lenawee, and Hillsdale Counties and therapist Emily McJones didn’t show they’re likely to win on the constitutional claims, the US District Court for the Western District of Michigan said Tuesday. Judge Jane M. Beckering denied their request to halt Michigan’s enforcement of the provisions pending trial, saying an injunction would harm the state.
