Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has issued an order blocking the extradition of criminal abortion crime suspects to other states in an effort to make Michigan a refuge for abortion services travel.
The order signed Wednesday acknowledges that the US Constitution requires the state to extradite criminal suspects who have fled into Michigan after committing a crime in another state—even an abortion-related crime. Michigan will not extradite suspects accused of another state’s abortion-related crimes if the alleged offense—such as a doctor traveling from out-of-state to perform an abortion in Michigan—was committed within Michigan’s borders.
