Miami Doctor Must Reimburse CMS $2.3M in Medicare Overpayments

A Miami doctor will have to repay $2.3 million in overpayments from Medicare for “medically unbelievable doses” of immune globulin injections, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida ruled July 18 (Miniet v. Sebelius, S.D. Fla., 1:10-cv-24127-PAS, 7/18/12).

The doctor, Ralph Miniet, submitted multiple claims to Medicare in 2003 and 2004 for Rho D immune globulin injections, which triggered his designation as a “high billing physician.” The designation resulted in a Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services contractor’s audit, which reviewed 60 claims for the injections and found all of them to be composed ...
