Social media companies are defending their efforts to combat illegal fentanyl sales on their platforms as Republicans decry a growing drug epidemic.

The tech industry is set to face new congressional scrutiny next year in the House, where Republicans will have a majority and have made oversight a centerpiece of their agenda. Republicans in both chambers have been particularly focused on the online sale of illegal drugs as overdose deaths in the US rise.
