Medical Provider, Social Worker Face Trial Over Inmate’s Suicide

The parents of a Jefferson Parish, La., inmate who committed suicide while in custody can go to trial against a health-care provider based on a social worker’s alleged deliberate indifference to the inmate’s need for mental health care, a federal court said.

CorrectHealth Jefferson, a private company that provides health-care services at the Jefferson Parish Correctional Facility, is potentially liable under a federal civil rights law for failing to adequately supervise social worker David Jennings, whose treatment of Jatory Evans allegedly failed to prevent to his suicide, the US District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana said.
