Device makers would take on substantial extra compliance burdens under a Medicare proposal to expand the types of payments to physicians and hospitals they have to report, according to attorneys who represent the industry.
The proposal would require reporting of debt forgiveness payments, medical supply or device loans, and buyout payments to physicians who are ceding ownership in device companies. The new payment categories would be added to a list of payments that both device and drug companies are already required to report to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services under the Open Payments program.
