State Medicaid programs made hundreds of millions of dollars in payments on behalf of beneficiaries who were dead, a federal watchdog agency estimates.
The US Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General on Tuesday released a report that investigated monthly payments made to Medicaid programs on behalf of beneficiaries who had recently died. The report estimated that between July, 2021, and June, 2022, the federal insurance program disbursed more than $207 million to its insurance contractors on behalf of enrollees who had passed away.
