ST. PAUL, Minn.—Mayo Clinic and Optum, an information and technology based health services group, Jan. 15 announced the opening of Optum Labs, a research and development facility that aims to use clinical information and claims information to improve patient care.

The facility is based in Cambridge, Mass., and is a research arm of Optum. It should help health care providers throughout the country make directional changes in how they care for their patients, Dr. John Noseworthy, president and chief executive officer of Mayo Clinic, said during the announcement of the deal.

Mayo’s Veronique Roger said the research should expand the information available to providers, offering them the ability to better treat patients.
