Lung Disease Patient Asks Court for Help With Transplant System

A woman in the intensive care unit of a New York City hospital asked a federal court to intervene in her effort to find a potential lung transplant.

Miriam Holman, a 21-year-old suffering from a fatal lung disease, sued the Department of Health and Human Services Nov. 20, claiming the Donation Service Areas (DSAs) of the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network violate federal law by allowing a potential donor organ to be offered to individuals within a specifically defined regional area despite someone of greater medical need waiting in an adjacent service area (Holman v.
