The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s procedures for issuing concealed-carry gun permits violate the Second Amendment, the Justice Department alleged in a lawsuit filed in federal court.

The lawsuit, filed Tuesday, is the latest example of shifting priorities at the DOJ’s civil rights division. Its leader, Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon has signaled plans to make protecting gun rights a top priority as the Trump administration reorients the division away from its traditional focus on rooting out discrimination against historically marginalized populations.
