Lawmakers Told of Failures in Kentucky Organ Transplant Case

An embattled organ transplant group told House lawmakers Tuesday that communication issues worsened an incident involving allegations of an organ retrieval attempt on a patient that was still alive.

Barry Massa, CEO of the organ procurement organization Network for Hope, was grilled by the House Energy and Commerce Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee after a federal government report found several incidences of uncompleted organ donations that were considered concerning.

Organ procurement organizations are nonprofits that coordinate procurement, preservation, and transport of organs and can recover organs from deceased donors, according to the Congressional Research Service.
