Late Data Breach Report Results in $130,000 Penalty for Heath Services Company

CoPilot Provider Support Services Inc. will pay New York state $130,000 in penalties for failing to report a data breach of patient records in a timely manner, New York Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman (D) announced June 15.

The company, which provides support to the health-care industry on health insurance benefits, coding, coverage, and payments, violated the state’s General Business Law by waiting more than one year to report a data breach of 221,178 patient records in 2015, Schneiderman said.

The data breach involved a CoPilot website used by physicians to determine if insurance coverage is available for certain medications. ...
