THE POWER to approve, or reject, any settlement over legal fees stemming from a bankruptcy judge’s secret romance scandal rests with an outsider, James Nani reports.

  • Chief US District Judge Alia Moses of Texas’ Western District has authority over any agreement that emerges from mediation between the firm, Jackson Walker, and the US Trustee, the government’s bankruptcy watchdog. The Trustee wants to claw back some of the $23 million the firm collected while one of its lawyers was romantically involved with former Judge David R. Jones. Moses would also preside over a trial if a deal can’t be reached.
