ST. PAUL, Minn.—Iowa Insurance Commissioner Susan E. Voss Jan. 28 approved an 8.5 percent increase in Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield health insurance rates in the state.
Wellmark, which holds a significant market share of the Iowa individual insurance market, had sought a 10.8 percent premium increase in November. The health plan has not yet indicated whether it will contest the commissioner’s decision.
Unless Wellmark withdraws its rate request and files another, the 8.5 percent increase will take effect on most of its individual policies in the state April 1.
