Indiana Physicians Challenge ‘Dismemberment’ Abortion Law

Two Indiana physicians who perform abortions sued the state to stop it from enforcing a new law prohibiting second-trimester dilation and evacuation abortion procedures unless physicians first ensure fetal demise.

House Enrolled Act 1211 is set to take effect July 1. D&E is the safest and most widely used procedure for abortions that take place after 14 weeks into a pregnancy, but before a fetus would be capable of living outside the womb, the physicians told the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana in a complaint filed April 25.
