Immigration Crackdown Passes Senate in Test of New Majority

Legislation to crack down on migrants accused of crimes passed the Republican Senate on Monday with bipartisan support, an early victory for President Donald Trump’s efforts to crack down on immigration.

The Senate passed the measure, 64-35, after only voting on one of the dozens of Democratic amendments proposed to the bill (S. 5), which is named after Laken Riley, a Georgia nursing student killed by an undocumented immigrant. The amended measure now heads to the House, which passed its version of the Laken Riley bill (H.R. 29) earlier this month.
