Illinois Redistricting Law Hit With Constitutional Challenge (1)

An Illinois state law that requires race to be considered in any redistricting plan violates the US Constitution, a lawsuit said.

The Illinois Voting Rights Act of 2011 includes requirements that “make racial considerations a core purpose of all legislative line drawing in Illinois,” Jeanne Ives alleged in a complaint filed May 8 in the US District Court for the Central District of Illinois. Ives is a former Illinois Republican state representative who also ran for governor and Congress.
