The top Republican in the Illinois House of Representatives sued to invalidate the chamber’s Democratic-approved district map, saying it was a product of “extreme partisan gerrymandering.”
The map violates the state constitution’s “free and equal election” clause, as well as a requirement that legislative districts be compact, the suit filed Tuesday in front of the Illinois Supreme Court by Minority Leader Tony McCombie alleges. In 2024, Democrats won 55% of the statewide vote for House seats but ended up with 66% of the seats, the complaint says.
