Illinois Conscience Law Tested for Limits on Doctors’ Speech

An Illinois law that conditions medical professionals’ immunity from liability in medical malpractice lawsuits on what they say to patients seems likely to be upheld following an appeals court argument Friday.

Amendments added to Illinois’ Health Care Right of Conscience Act in 2016 require medical professionals to give patients information about the risks and benefits of pregnancy and abortion, as well as where they can get one, if requested.

The anti-abortion advocacy group National Institute of Family and Life Advocates and others said these protocols violate the First Amendment.
