A bill that would codify a 30-year-old ban on using federal funds for abortion services and push private insurers to stop covering abortions passed the House Jan. 24.
The bill (H.R. 7) would codify into law the Hyde Amendment, a 30-year-old restriction preventing certain federal funds from paying for abortion except in medical emergencies or cases of incest or rape. The bill also would restrict federal funds for plans created under the Affordable Care Act for individuals and small businesses, if they include coverage for abortion services.
