Hospitals Come Out Swinging Against Medicare Buy-In Proposal

Some 36.5 million Americans now covered by employer-sponsored or individual health insurance would likely switch to Medicare by 2024 if a bill to create a low-cost public health option becomes law, two high-powered hospital associations said March 12.

Under the Medicare-X Choice Act (S. 1970), introduced by Sens. Michael Bennet (D-Colo.) and Tim Kaine (D-Va.), most people would be able to buy a low-cost public health plan on the Affordable Care Act exchanges, and providers would be reimbursed at Medicare rates.
