HHS Pegs Digital Health Data Collection as ‘Area of Concern’

Health-related businesses with a digital presence should be cautious when collecting people’s health data via ad-tracking technology because the federal government is watching, a privacy and security conference panelist warned Thursday.

Tracking tech embedded on a website or mobile app with an eye to targeting advertising also could improperly disclose health information. The issue is raising compliance questions in the digital health industry and among federal regulators, said Lyra Correa, a privacy policy specialist at the US Department of Health and Human Services’ Office for Civil Rights.
