The Biden administration Wednesday unveiled a proposal to modify federal privacy law to help protect reproductive rights amid heightening abortion restrictions.
The proposed rule (RIN: 0945-AA20) from the Health and Human Services Department’s Office for Civil Rights, suggests modifications to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 to improve reproductive rights privacy.
It would strengthen the privacy rule protections currently on the books by blocking health insurance plans, medical providers, and others from offering individuals’ protected health information connected to abortions and other reproductive health services obtained in states where they are legal.
