HHS Eases Organ Donations, Transplants for People With HIV

The Biden administration issued a final rule Tuesday that seeks to facilitate the transplantation of kidneys and livers from donors with HIV to recipients with HIV.

The rule (RIN 0937-AA13) from the Department of Health and Human Services amends the regulations implementing the National Organ Transplant Act of 1984 to remove clinical research and institutional review board requirements for these transplants.

“This rule removes unnecessary barriers to kidney and liver transplants, expanding the organ donor pool and improving outcomes for transplant recipients with HIV,” HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra said in a press release.
