A string of lawsuits against a health-care consultant is spotlighting confusion around the arbitration process meant to stop surprise medical bills, as insurers allege providers are intentionally flooding the zone with ineligible claims.

Arbitration consultant HaloMD is facing at least four lawsuits over what insurers say are fraudulent claims engineered with AI, while at least one of the firm’s clients—Nutex Health Inc.—is the target of short sellers and an investor lawsuit over its work with HaloMD.
