Governor Signs Legislation Creating Broader Prescription Drug Monitoring

Pennsylvania will replace the state attorney general’s system for monitoring Schedule II controlled substance prescriptions with a broader program that will maintain dispensing data for drugs on Schedules II through V, as a result of legislation signed by Gov. Tom Corbett (R) Oct. 27.

The Achieving Better Care by Monitoring All Prescriptions Program (ABC-MAP) Act (S.B. 1180) provides for creation of a board within the Pennsylvania Health Department that will establish and oversee an electronic database easily accessed by prescribers, dispensers and patients to track all controlled substances prescribed and dispensed in the state.
