Free Birth Control Bill Passes One Chamber in New York

A bill (A. 1378) requiring New York health plans to cover a range of contraceptives free of charge was approved by the state Assembly Jan. 17.

The bill, which would go beyond the requirements in the Affordable Care Act, was put on a fast track in the Democratic-controlled Assembly in anticipation of ACA repeal in Washington. It passed only six days after being introduced.

A spokesman for the Republican majority leader in the state Senate couldn’t be reached for comment on the bill’s chances in the Senate.
