Michael Villarroel has been sentenced in federal court to to one year and one day in custody after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud in connection with an insurance fraud scheme, the Justice Department said Friday.
Villarroel, who formerly served as a doctor in the US Navy, participated in a scheme that obtained around $2 million in payments from fraudulent claims submitted to the Traumatic Servicemembers Group Life Insurance Program, according to the DOJ.
