Former Industry Executive Expected to Be Named to Top Medicare Job

A former health insurance executive is expected to be named head of the Medicare agency’s Center for Medicare, sources told Bloomberg BNA.

Demetrios L. Kouzoukas was general counsel for United Healthcare Medicare and Retirement from 2012 to 2016. His role would be particularly critical because Seema Verma, confirmed as CMS administrator on March 13, lacks experience with the Medicare program, sources said.

Kouzoukas would be in charge of both fee-for-service Medicare providers and contractors, as well as Medicare Advantage and the Part D drug benefit as the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services deputy administrator and director of its Center ...
