Florida’s 24-Hour Abortion Waiting Period Law Suffers Setback

A Florida law requiring a woman to wait 24 hours after she receives state-mandated information before having an abortion eventually may become a vehicle for the U.S. Supreme Court to rethink its landmark decision recognizing a right to abortion (Gainesville Woman Care LLC v. Florida, Fla., No. SC16-381, 2/16/17).

The Florida Supreme Court Feb. 16 said the mandatory delay law likely impermissibly interferes with a woman’s right to privacy under the state constitution and, therefore, is invalid.
