Namandjé N. Bumpus, principal deputy commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, will leave the agency at the end of this year, according to an email statement from Commissioner Robert Califf sent to staff Tuesday.
Bumpus, who previously served as the agency’s chief scientist, succeeded the retired Janet Woodcock in 2023 to serve as the agency’s No. 2 official. As deputy commissioner, Bumpus worked closely with the FDA’s leadership to oversee the agency’s day-to-day functions. She notably played an integral role in the agency’s single largest reorganization, which rolled out Oct. 1.
