FDA Updates ‘Healthy’ Nutrient Claim for Food Labels, Consumers

Manufacturers that want to use the term “healthy” on their food packages will soon need to meet the FDA’s updated definition of the claim, following new criteria that would tackle the growing crisis of diet-related chronic diseases.

The Food and Drug Administration issued a final rule Thursday revamping the definition of the nutrient content claim “healthy,” which now aligns with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and the scientific evidence supporting the updated Nutrition Facts label.
