Emory University to Pay HHS $1.5 Million

Emory University in Atlanta agreed to pay $1.5 million to settle claims in a whistle-blower lawsuit that it double-billed Medicare and Medicaid for clinical trial costs that the sponsor already agreed to pay, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia and the state attorney general announced Aug. 28 (United States and Georgia ex rel. Elliott v. Emory Univ.).

The settlement agreement resolves a whistle-blower lawsuit brought in 2009 by one of Emory’s former research billing managers under the False Claims Act .
