Downing Wellhead Knocks Out Competitor’s Oilfield Tech Patents

An SEF Energy LLC unit convinced a Texas federal judge that a Pason Systems Corp. unit’s patents are invalid in a dispute between the competitors concerning oil wellhead-control technology.

Intelligent Wellhead Systems Inc.’s US Patent Nos. 11,274,520 and 11,608,708 are ineligible for protection because they’re directed to abstract ideas and don’t contain inventive concepts, according to an opinion filed Tuesday in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Texas. Judge J. Campbell Barker found the ‘708 patent is “directed to the abstract idea of communication through various signals,” and the ‘520 patent “merely automates a physical process.”
